Sociological insight
through network sonar

Internet usage statistics were gathered over the course of a few days in October 2004 by repeatedly pinging all hosts on select ISP class C networks in:

Toronto, Canada

Amsterdam, Holland

Belgrade, Serbia

Note: differences in absolute numbers of active hosts can be ascribed to the fact that the two latter network blocks are for dial-up users, while the first is cablemodem. In both cases, however, the curve is taken to represent relative activity on the network. The absolute numbers should be disregarded.

A wider and more detailed effort may carry relevant information about sociological, economic, technological, cultural and other aspects of the societies in question.

Additional insight into the nature of connectivity on the examined networks can be obtained by assembling graphical connectivity maps.
